ESEOO Forecast

Technical Description of the real-time ESEOO Forecast System

The ESEOO Forecast system consist on a set of different applications, which objective is to produce a real-time short-term (72 hours) forecast of currents and other oceanographic variables, temperature and salinity among others, as well as to obtain a better understanding of the ocean dynamic. The forecast system is based on the use of numerical models driven by meteorological and oceanographical forcing.

In order to fulfil the objective of providing ocean forecast over the Spanish waters, the ESEOO system is constituted by three different regional applications, named ESEOAT, ESEOMED and ESEOCAN, respectively focussed on providing coverage over the Northeastern Atlantic (more specifically its Iberian Peninsula closest area), the western Mediterranean basin and the area surronding the Canary Islands.

Nowadays, it is operationally run an application over the ESEOAT domain. Puertos del Estado has worked on the development of this ESEOAT aplication based on the shelf-sea circulation POLCOMS model. Currently, PE is operationally running on daily basis the ESEOAT System.

Likewise, different activities are going on to develope aplications, analogous to the ESEOAT one, to stablish operational real-time forecast systems in the rest of the ESEOO domains.
